President of the Michigan Farmers Union, Bob Thompson, responded to President Trump’s tariffs by saying,

“Donald Trump said he was going to make our grocery bills less expensive, but less than a month into his presidency and heʼs already breaking this promise – go figure. Many families buy everyday products from Canada, Mexico and China, and they will surely pay the price. This is not to mention the impact that tariffs will have on independent family farmers, who are already facing high input costs and volatile commodity prices. While the tariffs on Mexican goods have already been delayed, the farming community still needs greater clarity on how these actions will affect their operations, and the White House is not providing answers.

Let’s be clear: This is not a solution to deal with trade deficits. These one-sided actions will only hurt our economic security, especially for farmers who suffered dearly when Trump imposed tariffs during his first term. Our elected officials in Washington have a responsibility to stand up to these disastrous policies that will imperil independent family farmers and rural communities.”
