Tlaib and Wilkins: Air Pollution Disproportionately Affects Black Mothers in Detroit

Black women across the United States — and specifically in Michigan — are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes.
While racism at the point of care must be dealt with, we can’t forget how structural racism’s impact on Black maternal health is due in part to alarming and pervasive environmental factors. Black Americans are more likely than their white counterparts to live in areas with higher levels of air pollutants, and these heightened exposures are associated with an increased risk of asthma, cancer and death.
